Simple Steps for Building a Waterfall

You've landscaped your yard and now you want
to build a waterfall for your garden or pond.
Before you begin, there are a couple of simple
steps, which you need to follow to ensure you
build a solid, reliable, and beautiful waterfall
that's also beneficial to your pond, both for
its beauty and in contributing to the health of
the pond.
Basic steps on building a Waterfall:
- Size does matter. A waterfall which is
too tall for a pond will create turbulence
that is harmful to both plant and fish. This
is one reason why you never see fish or
plants in fountains. You want your waterfall
to have a gentle, peaceful flow of water.
This means that the water should cascade
down over a gradually slanted hill of rocks
to the pond below.
- Make it look natural. Whether you use
natural rocks to create the waterfalls
formation or pre-molded fiberglass, you want
it to look as natural as possible. The base
structure of the waterfall should be trough
or hill shaped, and if possible lined with
the same material used to line the pond to
prevent water runoff. You can cover the
lining with stones or strategically placed
plants.
- Because your artificial backyard
waterfall will not have a river feeding it,
the water which flows into your pond will
have to be circulated back to the top of the
waterfall with a water pump and PVC pipe.
The continual circulation of water will help
to keep the water clean, purified, and
oxygenated for the fish.
